Simple mass balance controllers for continuous sedimentation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The rational use of water in the mineral processing industry has become an im-portant issue due to the geographical location of many plants. The increase of capacity in manycopper concentrators has lead to an increased effort for recovering the maximum amount ofwater in the solid-liquid separation process. Thickeners work continuously to produce a con-centrated underflow and a water overflow free from particulate matter. The behavior of manyprocesses can be represented by a set of intensive and extensive variables. In this case, practicehas shown that standard feedback control based on intensive variables has not been very easyto tune and effective in providing consistent operations. In many plants, thickeners operatewith poor standards, with high dosages of flocculants, overflows with high fine particles con-tents and highly variable underflows. This work presents a novel nonlinear PI controller whichis able to stabilize thickener operation using a simple control structure. An internationallyaccepted model and calibration using plant data is used to illustrate the design methodologyand the level of performance attained by the controllers. The analysis of the results points outthe improved performance by using extensive variables. In addition some guidelines concerningcontrollers tuning are also provided.

Dynamic Simulation and Control of a Continuous Bioreactor Based on Cell Population Balance Model
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) can exhibit sustained oscillations during the operation in a continuous bioreactor that adversely affects its stability and productivity. Because of heterogeneous nature of cell populations, the cell population balance equation (PBE) can be used to capture the dynamic behavior of such cultures. In this work, an unstructured-segregated model is used f...
متن کاملSelenium mass balance in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.
A mass balance for Se in the south arm of the Great Salt Lake was developed for September 2006 to August 2007 of monitoring for Se loads and removal flows. The combined removal flows (sedimentation and volatilization) totaled to a geometric mean value of 2079 kg Se/yr, with the estimated low value being 1255 kg Se/yr, and an estimated high value of 3143 kg Se/yr at the 68% confidence level. The...
متن کاملThe Effects of Continuous Cognitive Task on Postural Control of People with Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Using Balance Error Scoring System
Objective: People with Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction need to have almost automatic postural control to focus on their athletic skills. Continuous cognitive task is a method for removing attention from postural control. The effects of continuous cognitive task on postural control of people with ACL reconstruction has been assessed by laboratory tools; however, its effect using ...
متن کاملOperating charts for continuous sedimentation II: step responses
Abstract. The process of continuous sedimentation of particles in a liquid has often been predicted by means of operating charts and mass-balance considerations, where the underlying constitutive assumption is the one by Kynch. Much more complex operating charts (concentration-flux diagrams) can be obtained from a onedimensional model of an ideal continuous clarifier-thickener unit. The enginee...
متن کاملMass balance assessment for mercury in Lake Champlain.
A mass balance model for mercury in Lake Champlain was developed in an effort to understand the sources, inventories, concentrations, and effects of mercury (Hg) contamination in the lake ecosystem. To construct the mass balance model, air, water, and sediment were sampled as a part of this project and other research/monitoring projects in the Lake Champlain Basin. This project produced a STELL...
